Symbols Instructions
The Spiers dictionary uses special symbols to represent the sense or use of a particular term (i.e. figurative sense,
seldom used, religious expression). It is possible to enter these symbols using Microsoft Word, but it is much
easier to use the following replacements for the symbols (which are much simpler to type). Whenever you see one of the
special symbols listed in the left-hand column, type what appears in the right-hand column instead.
When you see: Type this instead:
................ -- (two minus signs)
................ = (an equal sign)
................. + (a plus sign)
................. ++ (two plus signs)
................. || (two "pipe" symbols, above the "\" symbol on the keyboard)
................. $ (a dollar sign)
................. !! (two exclamation points)
................. * (an asterisk)
 .............. ** (two asterisks)
................ # (a number/pound sign)
................. {{ (two opening curly brackets, above the "[" on the keyboard)
................. }} (two closing curly brackets, above the "]" on the keyboard)
............... () (an open parenthesis followed by a closed parenthesis)
................ @ (the "at" symbol, above the "2" on the keyboard)
Here is an example of a typed page that contains some of these symbols.
